The Smoghampton & Greenhills Railway
Return to the Gauge 2 Index

This layout was built by Ned Williams as a tribute to his childhood friend Francis Ashley, The Smoghampton & Greenhills Railway is the only Gauge 2 layout known to have existed in modern times, although now sadly dismantled. The layout was twice exhibited at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre. Here are some of Ned's photographs.

Here is Ned with Francis Ashley, and Ned's letter to 'Model Engineer' following the Bicester G1MRA show where the G2 layout was assembled.

One Gauge 2 treasure preserved by Francis and subsequently by Ned is a most impressive girder bridge, believed to be the one illustrated by Greenly in 'Models, Locomotives and Railways' in July, 1913:

Ned's article describing this can be found in Garden Rail, February 2023. Appropriately, the bridge has subsequently found a new life on a magnificent '0' gauge layout in the South of England, as discovered and photographed by Adrian Johnstone:

Clement Crabbe's bridge today.
